The flame was even and smooth all through the burn. Look for any evidence of rust inside the can or under the lid....this is bad.
Not the ultimate test but it answered weather or not the powder was still in good shape.

"Too old" for powders use is dependent upon its storage condition. I had one box of .45 from 1919 that also shot flawlessly. If the cases look clean and aren’t corroded, the ammo will probably work just fine.On another occasion, I shot three rounds of 1943-vintage steel case .45 acp ammo, five unknown vintage lead round nose .32 S&W rounds, and 11 .22 short bullets that came from a box that appeared to be from the 1950s. I'm only 69 and have only been shooting 60 years or so. You can guess how I “disposed” of it…out of the barrel of my Glock 21! In any case, I would keep the older powder for practice loads and buy some new for carry ammo.

I've shot rounds over 50 years old that shot well and others that were only 30 years old … Our favorite ammo for our AK’s is the Yugo M67 shown above which is only mildly corrosive and also non-magnetic. Simple fact is that they shoot great and are CHEAP.
