home server hardware

95% of my file servers simply do nothing more than traditional “file serving.” I only have one actual business app, our ERP system, running in house. By building your home server, you can get the real server-grade equipment for the acceptable price tag. 2 if you include Exchange but that, hopefully, will be in the cloud shortly soooo…..I started at Facebook about two years ago and a job at the time was very simple how do we build a more efficient server we started off with a very simple mission and the simple mission was create the most efficient compute at the best economics possible however we can get there working with who whomever we need to work with yeah about 18 months which is the normal length of time that it would take to do like a custom power supply project in the industry but what we ended up doing was not only the custom power supply project but the rack enclosure the server chassis the two sets of custom motherboards and setting up all the relationships and the end end supply chain as well between our Asian partners and Fremont California and then ultimately up to Oregon we looked at a lot of different things when we designed the server we looked at the electrical design of it we looked at the Power Distribution we looked at the thermal design and we looked at the mechanical design things that made sense that we needed we put on the motherboard components that were on the board which added cost consumed extra power however didn’t quite provide us any functionality we decided to remove so we talked a lot about what really matters here at Facebook we talked a lot about done is better than perfect you know I’ve said the server is a little bit of a hack and we’re proud of that the server itself I call it vanity free right it’s not beautiful but it gets the job done it doesn’t need to be pretty it doesn’t need to be painted it doesn’t need to have plastic bezels that guide airflow around we made these servers for us for Facebook and so we made them look pretty to us and looking pretty to us means that they’re efficient and means that they’re very very cheap and quite frankly means that they’re reliable as well our power supply is over ninety four and a half percent efficient in the end of the day we’re producing less heat and consuming less energy and then on the thermal side I think that’s the other key area of efficiency where we use the data center as a cooling device for the servers so we we’re using a lot less server fan power by utilizing the data center fans because they’re larger diameter fans so they can move a lot more air with a lot less power we weigh about six pounds less than traditional servers out there but six pounds of lesson body the energy six pounds less material which is going into our facilities and if you multiply that across our relatively large deployment of servers it makes quite a bit of difference it makes even the data center text jobs easier because neither lifted six pounds less every time they have to fix a server we did all of this work and we didn’t just do it for ourselves I feel like we did it for the community at large so we’re opening up everything that we that we can right now that includes the server motherboard specification all the CAD files for the triplet rack that we designed as well as the server chassis the power supply specifications and then all of the data center design work as well by getting more people to think about how infrastructure works we can get feedback on the project and improve it even further the first thing I’d love people to do is give us feedback tell us where we screwed up tell us where we made a bad decision and help us make it better the second thing I’d love for people to do is take the technology we’ve created and use it and improve it and adapt it the third thing I think is actually the most important thing which is take our philosophy and adopt it in your own business sharing software has existed for many many years but it hasn’t taken foothold in the hardware space or in the data center world yet we hope we are simply opening the door for other people to come walk through and bring forth their own ideas and own innovations and share them with the rest of the world because we fundamentally believe that by virtue of creating a community around these problems we’ll all collectively be better and be more efficient as a result…All right Amira what are we looking at here okay so this is an open compute server that we use at Facebook today chances are if you go to your Facebook page is going to be served what we have here is a motherboard based on the Intel platform has two Intel Westmere processors we also have a name a version of this board to has two Opterons in it interesting things about the servers that’s taller than most servers it’s one and a half feet tall this allowed us to use larger heat sinks with more surface area so they’re more efficient also allowed us to use larger sixty millimeter fans which use less energy so not only you have more efficient way of moving the air but we also need less of it at this point this is our custom power supply over here in the back ninety four and a half percent efficient has actually two inputs on this side over here one for 277 volts another one for 48 volts over here forty-eight volt is a backup power system so if we lose power on the main connector utility goes away we discharge the lead acid batteries through this connector into the server and keep it on line just long enough for our generators to kick it at which point they’ll take over and start powering 277 we designed the server to be very friendly to the technician so it’s musi the swap components in and out for example on the power supply to swap it all you do is pull it plunger pin and push the power supply back you can take it right out takes a matter of seconds there’s no cables there’s no master no routing of cables no mess to really worry put it back in much power supply slaw motherboard has same type of features we use crest fit standoffs hold the motherboard in place pops out very easily and also snaps right back in holds the motherboard motherboard securely so I’m looking at this and it doesn’t have any I realize it’s a demonstration but it doesn’t have any fancy servers stuff on the outside like external stuff exactly I call this vanity free this is actually how they look in the data center there’s no front bezels no plastic no logos no real graphics there’s no paint no fancy materials it’s one point two millimeter pretty plated sheet metal that is pressed while there’s actually only seven pieces of metal on the chassis itself so the very quick very cheap and very easy so send me Costco down and because we made it so simple the weight of it is actually a lot lighter than the typical server weighs around six pounds less typical six pounds less material that you need to recycle at the end of life six pounds less wait for the protect lift when they have to repair server so the real things have the Facebook will go in and or is that just for show here that I’ll finish up this is for the show keep our hard drives in the back over here each hard drive tray can hold two drives and snap in with the tool this rail as well as vibration dampening built into the rail and the rails come off without any tools and you can put up to six drives in this from the server in the 3dr cage locations pretty cool most of our servers only have a single drive that we use very cool well thank you very much sir Isaac yeah…Are you new to vSphere and you’re looking for guidance on supporting virtualization?

Then there is the time needed to migrate off the old hardware, which could take weeks or months depending on what ends up getting upgraded along with the servers. Also, if you do upgrade the servers then you’ll likely upgrade vSphere and ESXI to 6.7, which also adds more complexity and time, and likely additional cost for licenses. And if you decide to go with more Dells, then you’re looking at spending anywhere between 8 – 12k per node for decent 1U pizza boxes with enough cores and memory to make the upgrade worth doing. ).Now granted, depending on the sophistication of your App some users may get bounced out, but that’s a fixable problem. A favorite is Veeam FastSCP, The Best NAS (Network Attached Storage) Devices for 2020. It features easy installation and activation, selection of hardware among 10+ boards, easy use of external hard drives for storage, domain name for device and access to device through Internet, automatic HTTPS setup … NY 10036. Future US, Inc. 11 West 42nd Street, 15th Floor, It allows you to control things in your home such as By using this software you can make your computer into a server very quickly, It is recommended to read through the You can install this software on Linux too, which is more secure, but a little bit complicated) the best combination would be a puppy Linux and Xamp for the Almost any desktop or laptop made in the last ten years should suffice unless you are planning to run some intensive programs for many users (unlikely on a home network). I would add some memory just for VM usage.I’ve got a T110 ii doing the exact same and it’s working great. What would be the optimal amount of memory to run all of my containers? Can you tell me something about your software stack?New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be castA community based around the building, set up, and use of home servers for a variety of purposes. Im running a plex server and a Minecraft server off of it. It doesn’t need to have plastic bezels that guide airflow around!
