The premise’s major handicap is that it portrays humanity as no match for malevolent spiritual energies when it is teens who are not. Sarah is not trapped in the altar room with Doris' spirit as in the film, but rather Laine crawls down the passageway into the altar to get Doris' body. The novel was released on September 16, 2014.The plot of the novel differs from the movie in many notable ways, containing an additional flashback sequence at the beginning of the book which occurs two months before Debbie dies, giving a more in-depth backstory to the main characters.

This causes strife between Trevor and Laine, as he believes that if she'd never held the seance then Isabelle would still be alive. Strange things happen, and a presence smashes Pete's hand and face into a mirror. The following day Laine is spending time with her boyfriend Trevor at a diner, where they meet up with their friend Isabelle. Doris was the evil entity all along and her mother was trying to stop the friends from summoning her.Casting was announced in November and December 2013.Principal photography began mid December 2013 in Los Angeles wrapped at the end of January 2014

This proves easier said than done and Trevor is also killed before Sarah manages to locate the corpse. Laine sees an old woman, and everyone flees. The message "Hi friend" from Doris in the novel appears as "Hi frend". However they accidentally release an evil spirit, a spirit that wants all of them dead, they must find a way to put this spirit back to sleep before they all end up dead.Debbie Galardi recalls playing Ouija with her best friend Laine Morris as children. There are longer sequences with Laine's grandmother Nona as well. Laine visits Doris' sister, an old woman named Paulina, who is now committed to a Laine revisits Paulina and realizes that the old woman, revealing that she was in allegiance with Doris, intentionally lied. While researching the previous family's history, they learn of a little girl named Doris Zander who went missing, and whose mother was suspected in her disappearance. The scene then fast forwards to present day, where Debbie is playing with the board by herself & is so unnerved by what she experiences that she tries to burn the board & planchette before calling Laine. A girl is mysteriously killed after recording herself playing with an ancient Ouija Board, which leads to a close group of friends to investigate this board. They later find out that some things aren't meant to be played with, especially the 'other side'. After Laine leaves, the Ouija board reappears in Debbie's bedroom. Debbie says goodbye to Laine, and Laine falls unconscious. Trevor and Laine quickly head home & unleash the spirits of Doris & Mrs Zander.
