He’s done it being himself, which I admire.“I’ve always admired people who have the courage to do it their way.“I don’t think it’s appropriate that our relationship, or the breakdown of our relationship, is a focus at this time.”Buckley was asked if he could see a time when he and Malthouse might bury the hatchet.“That’s probably for another time, because any more comment I make about it, I’m not confident will be received in the right way,” he said.“If you want to refer to where I reckon it stands at the moment, I’ve already made those comments.Above all, Buckley said Malthouse’s induction deserved due recognition.“I agree with Mick, the focus on this one relationship is disappointing … given Mick’s induction in the Hall Of Fame,” he said.“The focus should be on his significant contribution to the game, as a player and a coach.”As the bye rounds get set to kick off in the AFL over the next three weeks, the umpiring department will take the most of their opportunity for a brand new trial with less games on offer.The trial will consist of an extra umpire during games that will allow the field umpires to rotate on and off the ground like an interchange system.Three umpires will start on the ground with the fourth ready for when fatigue kicks in and the hope is it will reduce the workload and thus lead to better decisions being made.It could also allow umpires to work multiple games throughout the weekend as they wouldn’t be as tired with the ability to swap in and out.“The AFL Umpiring Department will conduct a trial with the use of four field umpires rotating in and out of the three on-field umpiring positions in each of the 18 matches to be played across rounds 12 — 14 of the 2019 Toyota AFL Premiership Season,” an AFL statement read.“AFL General Manager Football Operations Steve Hocking said the Umpiring Department, headed by Grant Williams and Damian Farrow, wished to use these bye-period rounds to better understand the physical and cognitive benefits of being able to flexibly manage the four umpires’ game involvement, following several trials in JLT matches over recent years and a VFL match.“During these trials, the Umpiring Department will look to have some of the field umpires officiate in two games across the one weekend.“In the note sent to clubs, the Umpiring Department said it was hoped the trial will:— Enable the collection of data and observations to help determine if this on-field umpiring model should be one considered for the future.— Develop insights as to whether such a four-umpire model will enhance the career longevity of umpires.— Potentially allow the best decision-making umpires the opportunity to officiate in multiple games should the model reduce the physical demands on a umpire.”
